Marching on to spring! I can't wait for the weather to warm up…… I'm already shopping for shorts!
March was a fargin hoot. It was the Massachusetts month. It began with a week run at Rascal's comedy in Springfield, which turned out to be fun. My hotel room was sweet, the bars were aplenty, so I consumed copious amounts of libations, slept in, worked out, ate good food, and enjoyed my thirty minute work days.
The next two weeks were spent in Andover and Worcester, which turned out great. I love working the road. I love hotels, nearby gin joints, and room service. It makes me smile.
Other than all of that, I really don't have much to say. I still haven't found a couch… can anyone help me? I want a nice one, dammit.
Oh yeah, I did the last Sunday River gig of the year a couple of weeks ago, and it turned out all right. Much better than last time!
So, I worked my ass off in March. Not much fun reading about it.
April is gonna be a doosie, I'm off to work at Rascals in New Jersey for the first week, and then I'm invading Manhattan for a few days. I'm going to hit the clubs and check the yuk-yuk scene down there, and also…. Get this…….. I'm going to see In Flames and Jag Panzer!
I know what you're thinking, “What is he talking about?”
It's O.k.. I expect you to be dumbfounded. In Flames happens to be, in my opinion, the best new heavy metal band on the planet. There's no hip hop beats, no rapping, or moronic self deprecating laments. It's good old school bang your head and sing along to the melodies kind of Iron Maiden metal that I love. If you dig that kind of music, which I'm sure you don't, check them out. Boston comic Sam Walters tipped me off to them over a year ago, and he's created a monster. I've spread the gospel since, bringing people into the church that is Swedish metal. I'm up to two members already. Some people just don't get it.
Jag Panzer is as gay of a metal band as you could imagine. Way high voiced singer, gang vocals, violins, and to top it off, they just released a rock opera based on the life of Mac Beth, entitled “Thane to the throne.” Their uncool credentials are off the charts, and I don't care. They rule, and I'm gonna kick some New York ass in the front All you people that thought I was a hip pretentious snot have another thing coming. My guilty pleasure is European style heavy metal, which is as accepted as Danny Bonaduce with a mullet. You get the point. Wish me well.
I just got an email an hour ago with notice that long time Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo had succumbed to cancer this morning. He was 51. It broke my heart to hear that one of my boyhood heroes is gone. He was a huge influence on my drumming early on, and part of his playing will live in me forever. It's a shame to hear that such a warm, talented guy is no longer here. Thanks for being such an influence on me Randy, and good luck on the other side.
I'll have a ton of cool stories at this time next month, so tune in. See you out there, and play safe!
